In boundary for multiple schools

But it's obvious what this whole "cut Shepherd out" campaign is all about. Get real.

I think it is really just 1-2 Eaton, Oyster or Hearst parents that are constantly bringing up this anti-Shepherd campaign.

People in the boundaries of a "failing" school are granted inbound status to other designated schools.

OP here. How is "failing" described? And that certainly can't be the only reason. For example, neither Ross nor SWW@F-S is failing, and most Ross students are IB for SWW@FS.

Oops, meant "defined," not "described."

This is why they attend Deal and always have.

I have no dog in this fight but Shepherd has only fed to Deal since 2000 so let's not get carried away.

Yeah that can't be the full story since I'm inbounds only for two schools, both failing by any reasonable metric. On the dcps scale both are 'priority'. There is a better ranked school that is geographically closer to my address, but I get no priory there.

Attendance zone map is here:
http://dcps.dc.gov/DCPS/Files/downloads/SCHOOLS/Boundary%20Maps%20-%202009/DCPS-Attendance-Zones-Elementary-Grades-September-2009.pdf

If you look at the map, you'll see that when schools are closed often the kids from those schools get to choose which of the neighboring schools they want to go to.

So in Columbia Heights you'll see where it says "Formerly Meyer, has rights to H.D. Cooke, Tubman, and Garrison"

This is really DCPS at its finest. Never settle anything, just add another layer.

Thank you! I think that explains it. Of course, it is DCPS so it makes not sense. I wonder if this is something that they will try to do in the boundary review process. I sure hope so.

Anonymous wrote:Sure. There are several people I have met who are in-boundary for Tubman (Columbia Heights), H.D. Cooke (Adams-Morgan), and Garrison (Logan Circle). They seem to live around the U street area. I have also met people who are in-boundary for Francis-Stevens and Ross. Similarly, I have met people in boundary for Francis-Stevens and Marie Reed.

Its because their in boundary school (can't remember the name) was closed and they got IB preference for the three schools.

What I don't get about this boundary map is why someone in boundary for Ross would also be in boundary for Francis Stevens. Or why someone in boundary for Marie Reed would be in boundary for Francis Stevens. It seems like each boundary is discrete on the map.

I'm inbounds for both Thomson and School without Walls at Francis Stevens. I was pretty sure a couple year ago, I was just inbounds for Thomson and then Jefferson for middle school. Anyone know what this change is about?

(This is academic as my child attends a DCI feeder, but I still am very interested).

In case I caused confusion, it expressly says elementary and middle for SWW at FS.

but if you compare it to other schools feeding deal, I think they are longer, so that is not a real selling point.
