This is what we've always done and it does work. You feel a little goofy sometimes yipping, but it is how puppies learn bite inhibition with their litter mates.

I agree with this--it's fine, as long as it works for you. Honestly I tried the stick the finger down the throat technique with my dog as a puppy, and it wasn't any more effective than grabbing her muzzle and saying "no biting." She thought it was a game, and would nip at my hand, but YMMV.
