Top Tier

My, such certainty! Spoken like a true alum, determined to get every penny's worth out of that degree...

Cathedral Schools (Beauvoir, STA, NCS)

Sidwell

GDS

20:48 here again. I would agree with this - it is what I have heard repeatedly since we moved to DC and these are the only schools that are generally mentioned outside of DC itself. Plus, the college exmissions records appear to back them up.

But I want to say that, like in NYC, college exmissions are not necessarily good indicators of what the best school is for a given child. At all.

Actually, mention GDS outside of the DC area, and usually you only get a blank stare, unless you say "Georgetown Day School," to which, of course, they assume it's part of GU.

Face it D.C., much as you obsess about the private school scene, it's only STA and Sidwell that have any recognition beyond your borders.

9:22 here again. Yes, I have to agree with this. Just didn't want to say it.

But, again, I am also not saying that there aren't a number of schools that could be great for a given child. Just like in NYC, I never really understand why it is such a big wonderful thing that a school can report certain college exmissions when the reality is that the school has as its students a higher number of legacy applicants and the highest performing children to begin with.

In terms of national recognition (putting aside the famous kids who attend Sidwell i.e. Obama girls, Clinton ect) St. Albans is on top

Very true. Only a couple DC schools have any national recognition. Many NY schools do

So what does "national recognition" of a high school get you? Really nothing. College admissions staff will be familiar with schools other than STA. And beyond that who cares? So not sure why this should be a factor in choosing an appropriate school for your child. And who cares if schools in NYC have more national recognition (although the only NYC school I have heard of is Chapin). Unless you are sending your child to school in NY it seems irrelevant.

DC'ers aren't big on (or privy to) the northeast, in general.

Oh, please.

Such a tone of presumptive importance and inside information here. Are you aware of how ridiculous you sound? Or that your sentence doesn't even make sense?

(And who says "DCers"?!)

I gotta chime in here: this talk about national recognition is kinda silly. I went to a "top tier" school in NYC which I have not found that many people outside of NYC have heard of. I think the only high schools that are really known outside their area are the big boarding schools like Andover, Exeter, Hotchkiss, St. Pauls, Groton, etc...

Exactly. And beyond that, I can't think of anyone in any professional circle in DC who gives a rat's rectum about where a job applicant went to high school. I've known a few people who went to those nationally-known boarding schools, and most times they keep it to themselves because in the public interest community, going to an expensive school like that is not something that you want to broadcast. I know that Bush 43 went to Andover and Gore went to St. Albans... but that's more celebrity gossip than anything else, and both are from political dynasties.

Apply to these well-known schools if they're suitable for your child, but the "top tier" designation is truly meaningless.

I'm another poster who relocated from NYC, and I have to respectfully disagree with the previous NYC transplant. I have found the two systems totally different, and the tier thing totally different. 1. I think who you know matters more in DC admissions an order of magnitude more than it matters in NYC. 2. The Manhattan private schools are largely segregated by academic ability from k onwards in a way that the DC schools just aren't until 6th grade.
