As the OP, I agree. Wasn't trying to attack Don Graham. Just trying to place his opinion piece in a political context. There is more to this than a fondness for Henderson and a benevolent spirit toward the public school children of DC. It's that political context that is worth discussion. |
I do agree with the stay-the-course, devil-you-know arguments. You may not love the course under Chancellor Henderson, but many good things are happening, and importantly, the system is at a sort of progressive equilibrium.
A new chancellor means vastly incompatible hopes and dreams all get fought out through the naming, appointment, and actions of a new person. WTU: angry. New parents: angry. Longtime residents: angry. Reformer-types: angry. Lots of people in Ward 3, Ward 2, Ward 1, Ward 4, Ward 5, 6, 7 and 8 are unhappy. But many see a forward trajectory and that counts for SO much. This is DCPS we're talking about, the modern reason for the growth of DC's suburbs in spite of horrendous commutes. Who could really live up to a situation like that and not make some players really angry? At least now, the rage has work off and there is system to work with, shape and improve. |
The Post is really worthless. They have endorsed Bowser and adored Rhee. It's not a credible publication, and that's not even getting into Graham's involvement with Kaplan. |
Except there is no staying the course. There are huge changes brewing. |
The Post editorial page has lost all credibility on education issues. I don't even look anymore it's so reliably ridiculous. They have such a strong ideological bent -- and I agree completely with Jeff that's it's entirely proper to raise the issue of an associated financial interest -- that the op-eds continually contort/distort the facts as needed to keep to the story line. |
So which candidates would keep Kaya and which would not? |
Wells and Evans have said they would keep her. Bowser has been non-committal, but I can't believe she wouldn't keep her. One would think Henderson's job would be endangered if Shallal won, but I haven't heard him say either way. |
You do know that most successful people you know via the news own multiple business, sometimes seemingly in conflict with each other, right? In short, capital is very, very concentrated. The Post is disappointing recently though. I used to really love their Op-Ed pages. Not so much anymore. I don't know if that's because my "politics" have changed somewhat -- and, thus, it is unfair to criticize the Post when it was me that changed -- or if the Post really did go downhill. Does the endorsement of Bowser make more sense given that Catania cannot be endorsed yet since he isn't running? That's what I've used as my consolation. |
This is the Post having its cake and eating it, too. Endorse Bowser because Gray is way too icky but back your way into a wink-wink Gray endorsement with this piece on Henderson. They are a joke. |
Trending and keeping one relevant is the new thing. So the Washpo are doing what they know will keep people talking. There's a thin-line between what is news and what is just fodder. |
I found that inconsistency odd, too. |
Nothing inconsistent at all. They like Rhee (and Fenty). Henderson is like Rhee and worked with her. Kind of stupid to attribute her to Gray and not to Fenty. Kind of stupid to attribute her to anyone at all. |
She serves at the will of Gray. |
+1 |
I will give you Williams, but your post lost all credibility when he likened Rhee to Williams. Ha, Rhee made a terrible situation of DCPS worst. Now if you live in Ward 3, I can see why you would think Rhee was great for the city, but if you live in one of the other 7 wards where she combined Elementary school space and children with Middle school children, you would be foolish to think Rhee was great. |
