Why do police tend to stop older cars more often?

I'm a white male in my 20s

I haven't been stopped at all by the police since I got a brand new honda civic in 2011

I work 2nd shift and in my area you are likely to get stopped when I'm leaving work

I was stopped several times in my old car that had fender damage

Never ticketed. They didn't find what they wanted (drugs I guess?)

Yes, cops do profile based on vehicle image. And I don't blame them. It is a good indicator

It is a good indicator of what? Driving an old car?

evidence?

I thought they stopped flashy red cars the most.

emissions systems are much more durable than they used to be

I rarely see Mercedes, Corvettes, BMW, etc, stopped but always see older cars and those that are not as flashy stopped.

I was in one of the state's offices making a tax payment, and the line was filled with people whose driver's licenses had been revoked for small and larger tax bills. I was listening as they discussed their cars and problems. Most were old(er) cars, and they were dependent on their cars to get to their menial jobs.

What?? Mercedes, BMWs, Audis, and Porsches are certainly pulled over in this area because this area has a disproportionately large number of luxury cars. I see it all the time and have been pulled over for speeding more than once in a non-flashy new luxury make sedan (different ones).

I drive an older car, and I definitely have no friends in the industry yet my car seems to pass. (And you don't get your car inspected at a body shop, anyway)

My stepson is a sheriff and a truly god fearing standupchristian man and he's told me he has never been instructed to pull over anybody for their vehicle appearance but rather for safety violations after all law enforcement is here to protect us from the more undesirable elements in our society

I haven't been stopped in over 25 years. I suspect it's because I drive sensibly and don't do stupid things on the road. I also keep my cars in good condition.

Same reason some people think police tend to stop cars with out of state plates more often...
Same reason some people think police tend to stop cars with tinted windows more often...
Same reason some people think police tend to stop cars with rims and custom paint jobs more often...
Same reason some people think police tend to stop cars with black drivers more often...
Same reason some people think police tend to stop cars with latino drivers more often...
Same reason some people think police tend to stop cars with middle eastern drivers more often...

Same reason some people think police tend to stop cars with certain bumper stickers more often...

The list goes on and on and you know why?
Cause everyone thinks its all about them and their problems.
Cause everyone thinks its absolutely impossible for anyone else to be as burdened or as troubled or as tortured as them AND cause if they look for it hard enough everyone can find evidence everywhere of racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, classism, homophobia, religious intolerance...the list goes on and on and similarly the presumptions about the police targeting one specific group go on and on as well.
Gimmie a break.

I do not know about the rest of your list but I know that studies have shown that police officers stop black drivers more often than others.

I think so--I used to have beat up cars when I was younger and I got pulled over all the time. Now I drive and Audi and MB and never get pulled over.

I used to get pulled over all the time in my 14 year old car for no reason. Cops would ask me where I was going while looking in my car for anything visible. Find nothing and off I’d go.

This has never happened to me in my new car.

Well, blacks in America commit most crimes at rates 2-5 times that of the white population. It's entirely possible that black drivers are getting pulled over because they're breaking traffic laws more.

For example: http://inspire.stat.ucla.edu/unit_04/racial.pdf

From the article: "The study involved photographing tens of thousands of drivers on the turnpike last spring while clocking speed with a radar gun. It found that black drivers sped much more than other drivers, according to three people who have reviewed the unreleased report. The racial gap was far wider than officials had expected and, in the politically charged controversies over profiling, the data could be used by defenders of the state police to argue that one reason black drivers are stopped more often than whites is that they are more likely to speed."

And: "Instead, the study concluded that blacks make up 16 percent of the drivers on the turnpike and 25 percent of the speeders in the 65 m.p.h. zones, where complaints of profiling have been most common."

There are other studies that find the same thing, but people don't like the results.

He's a Sheriff or a deputy? Sheriffs don't receive instruction. They give it.

Go back to bed, Russian bot.
