NT Results

Anonymous
I was 42 when I got pregnant with my son and had a bad bad bad NT-50% of having DS (or 12,18). This was after losing a pregnancy at 12 weeks to age related DS. We were in tears. We opted for a CVS, and 3 days later found out we were having a healthy baby boy. Those 3 days of waiting were pure hell but I was then able to enjoy my one and only pregnancy. I needed to know for sure, any doubt would have made me miserable.

I am the 08:33 poster who said your results were high. I would like to apologize, I just did some research and turns out that your numbers are about average for your age. I thought the risk was much lower than that for your age. Since I am in my late 20s, I usually only look at numbers for my age group and thought it was the same for the early 30s, but I guess I was wrong. Sorry about that, I hope I did not get you worried for nothing.

I would have terminated if we had a DS fetus or trisomy 13/18. Because of that, we chose CVS and I'm so glad we did.

We got the all clear and I'm now able to relax. We went to Dr. Stern at Genetics and IVF. Both he and the genetic counselor we met with were fabulous. I highly recommend that group.

PP, was your decision to do CVS based at all on your first trimester screen results? Or were you sure you'd do CVS either way? If the former, would you mind sharing your results? Thanks!

We didn't have the NT test done because we knew we were going to do CVS. For us (mainly because we were quite sure we'd terminate), we went straight to CVS because we could do it so early. I am older than you--38--so that makes a difference and have a close friend who has a DS child. While this certainly isn't the case for all DS children, this one has had a lot of medical problems and a lot of surgeries. That is something I don't think I could put my child through. So, there you go. This is just me, I know not everyone feels like way though!

This is to 14:33 - not to go too far off topic, but did your friend have any indication that her DC suffered from down's syndrome prior to birth? Did she undergo any of the testing that was available at the time? Sorry to be so inquisitive about such a sensitive thing. I skipped having an amnio, and now I'm starting to revisit my concern that something could be wrong (my test results were adequate, and all ultrasounds have been in the clear - but it's still stressful until you see your child and the dr. confirms that he or she is healthy). I wouldn't have terminated if I had a DS diagnosis, but not knowing still opens a door to worry.

She found-out that it was highly likely that her DSon had DS at her 20 week ultrasound (her NT results weren't great but not terrible either--sorry, I don't know exactly what they were). She didn't have an amnio or cvs because she was afraid of the risks and also knew she wouldn't terminate--no matter what. She is my age (38) and if you look at the stats, they do increase rather dramatically at our age. HOWEVER, the chances of having a child with DS (or any serious genetic problem) are still low! It is easy to look at the numbers and worry but when you really think about what 1/300, for instance, means, you realize that the chances are still in your favor.

Hope this helps....

Yikes, PP here. Not sure why there is a smiley in my post. It should read that she is 38!

OP here again - I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice. I spoke with the genetic counselor, and she was very reassuring. We are going to do another blood test next week (15 wks), which they can send to the same lab and get a combined risk assessment. Feeling *much* better about things, and now am pretty sure we won't do amnio (unless the next test results come out shady). Thanks again!

I am 31 (was 30 when had my NT) and my results were 1/514. When my DH said "well, if that were my chances of winning the lottery I would play every day", I FREAKED OUT! The geneticist, whom I spoke with twice reminded me that I was considered low risk with these odds and not to worry. I was still anxious and asked my doctor, who again, told me this was different than the lottery (duh) and not to worry. He did schedule my 18-20 week ultrasound early, though, to try to assuage my anxiety. Of course, I had it at 17 weeks, 6 days, and the baby was really too small to see the heart chambers...more worrying for weeks. Anyway, I had a follow up ultrasound and all chambers were there...no signs of problems. I am now almost 30 weeks, and have not had any indications of problems, although I can't help but worry a bit. But, I am a worrier. It wasn't worth it to me to get the amnio, but that is really a personal decision. I think that if you take these screening tests, you have to be willing to "listen" to the results, and if the geneticist says "low risk", you need to be willing to trust them. I hope that everything turns out okay for you

I had CVS and it was totally easy - no big deal, and gave me a huge sense of relief. So maybe just do that and get a real answer, instead of going through additional guesstimates.

I would go to see a genetic counselor and seriously consider amnio. Dr. Pinkert's practice is excellent and in the hands of someone like him your risks of miscarriage are more like 1/600.

By way of comparison, I am 41 and my NT for down's was 1/6K. I still had an amnio because I was certain I would terminate if the baby had down's. I have had two amnios in my life--now have 1 healthy strapping 3 year old and a daughter due any day.

Good luck.

This is of course a tough decision -- best of luck. I can say that I had an amnio and didn't sleep for the 2 weeks leading up to it because I was so wracked with fear and guilt over the prospect of losing the baby. But, my amnio turned to be basically pain free (just felt wierd) and no symptoms.
