New Georgetown Prep president?

Why not hire a young Prep alum to take over the program. Giblin's military style of screaming at his players does not work in this day and age.

Just look at what Casey O'neil has done at Gonzaga. A much younger coach who brings a laid back positive attitude.

I dont see Giblin staying at Prep longer than 2 more years.

If a dim bulb like O'Neill can do it, anyone can.

A fair high school lacrosse player whose lack of skills landed him at a Lax backwater of a college.

23:15 you sound like an idiot.

Coaching HS kids is not easy.

Transforming a program into a national recognized power (what Giblin has done at Prep or what Bordley has done at Landon) is no easy task.

Are you mocking Casey? He is the best young up and coming coach in the area.

I am surprised schools like Prep and Landon would even care about having a "national" lacrosse program. It seems like a misplaced priority to me. Prep should focus on being the elite academic school for Catholics, placing all of its kids in the best colleges possible.

Prep can have well rounded kids and a good athletic program, without having to waste resources, and deal pushy Dads and Coaches, trying to run a nationally ranked program.

your son must have never made the team. I'm sorry

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. You are new to GP and maybe new to the area.

There already is one elite Catholic academic school. It's St Anselms.

Giblin's lacrosse program didn't start with a goal of being a National program. He just wanted to compete with conference mate, Landon. It actually consumes few GP resources. In fact, its a significant money maker for the school attracting a steady stream of applicants willing to pay list price.

GP's mission is to serve a Catholic community with a range of interests. They want a competitive sports program for the same reasons Harvard, Princeton and William want one. I'm sure the reasons are obvious, so I won't bother listing them for you.

Doesn't sound like its the place for you are yours. Not every family is obsessed with getting its kids into the "best colleges possible". Sounds like you should look at Sidwell.

I feel like any Prep thread turns into middle-school name calling really, really quickly. Like middle school, they are toughest on those in their group who don't toe the line.

When do they announce the new guy?

they still haven't announced. what is the deal?

One thing that brings me joy is watching the Prep lax coach's antics during games and practices. Someone should write down the things he says to his players - they are hilarious. And during practices he uses most colorful language. Probably not that much fun to play for him, and some years his teams appear to play too tight towards the end of the season.

Have you met anyone in the Catholic Mafia in this area? Have you seen Prep's athletic facilities? If you have done either, you wouldn't be saying that.

why hasn't the school announced who the new headmaster is? It would be public on their website.

Anonymous
they haven't announced it because they probably don't have one yet to announce! I have heard that they are having trouble getting the "right" choice. whatever that is.

Translation - finding a guy who is subservient to the dads who run that school.

The school is really having an identity crisis between current parents with deep pockets and the hardtime alums.

The old school members who have lived in DC their entire life, who graduated from Prep in the 60's and 70's and even eary 80's, want Prep to remain an elite athletic school that can compete with the likes of St. Johns and Gonzaga. Athletic competition is part of the Catholic culture. These alums, boosters, parents of former students, live for Prep athletics.

Since Father George went on a spending spree, Prep's tuition has gone up drastically ($31K). Prep in the past 4 years has made a push to improve its academic picture in the DC area. Parents and boosters continue to bitch and moan about the current admissions director who has not let in nearly the amount of athletes Prep used to have in the 90's and early to mid 2000's.

St. Johns and Gonzaga which used to be viewed as safety schools for Prep (Gonzaga has now become the destination of choice for Montgomery County Catholics) and even St. Johns is now starting to tap in the Mater Dei talent pool. Prep's tuiton is only going up with their campus and physical plant.

Prep as a result is now looking for families who can pay $31K a year to fill its walls. Yes they have student aid for a few of the athletes but the overall culture of the school is changing.

Father marco wanted to make Prep an elite Jesuit schol with a large boarding component. People on the board, several boosters, old-timers, clearly have been upset with the direction Prep is heading and Marco is mysteriosuly let go in the middle of the year. There is no secret here.

Whatever headmaster they choose will have a major problem on his hands. (its very strange why the school hasnt even filled this position or if they have gone since its now early MARCH and Marco was forced out last January) You can continue to point fingers that the search committee is "making sure the next headmaster" is the RIGHT guy to lead the school but I personally feel its something else. Maybe there is just too much politics with old alums and boosters that maybe any headmaster with prior big time experience doesnt want to take the job.

I hope Prep can ride the storm they are in now. Its never healthy from a PR standpoint to have a vacant headmaster seat for this long. The search committee has had over a year to fill this position.

You'll have to hang out at St. John's next season to watch him. Maybe with all that Under Armour money they can fund a lax reality series about him!
