Taking the test a second time alone should give hime the 100 point bump

If you go with the tutoring, the big classes (Kaplan and others) will be a waste of time because they go over what the average kid needs to know. Your son needs one of those tutors who do a diagnostic test first, to figure out where there's still room to improve. There are some companies that claim to do this for about $1,000, but we sent DC to one and DC reported back that they all studied as a group (of 5 kids) anyway, with little differentiation. A private tutor will run you more like several thousand.

One possibility that our DC was going to explore, but didn't get a chance to do, is Princeton Review's online class. It's about $600, I think you meet as a group once or twice but mostly worked online, and the whole thing began with a diagnostic test. But that was 2 years ago and I don't know if this online class is still available.

If he's persistent, then I'd recommend studying on his own, frankly. I did, and I was a NMSSF. If you go to Barnes and Noble online, there are books just for SAT math and just for grammar.
