To avoid reddish tones on brown hair I use Natural Instincts with the word Cool in the color.

If you have a lot of hair you may need 2 boxes of color ( per my hair dresser after I botched my DIY attempt)

By non-chemical shampoo, I mean a solid shampoo bar without detergents. I buy mine from Chagrin Valley Soaps. They might not suit everyone. After some trial and error, I have found a few that work for me.

I like loreal preference.

I have been using DIY hair color for 20 years. And get compliments all the time on my hair. EVEN my hairdresser admits it looks as good as what he does.

I have light to medium brown hair. I used to alternate between a golden color and an ash color to avoid going too far in either direction. Now use the midtone neutral colors they offer.

Or you can try esalon. I use them and their color seems gentler on my hair, for whatever reason. It's also highly customizeable and the tone I get isn't as brassy as supermarket boxes. They offer a subscription service.
