A ;simple answer to your question that will surely get me flamed:
The Europeans I have met think more deeply about world events, aren't bombarded by the American spin doctors who distort reality into things like an axis of evil, and at the end of the day, see Bush for what he is. An asshole who has no respect for the rest of the world if they aren't part of "our" agenda. |
So you're basically saying that Europeans are easily swayed? I don't think you give them (you being the exception, of course???) much credit. That's a ridiculous assertion. Any resourceful European will be able to identify the difference between CCN, for example, and FOX "News." As the other PP said, people choose news media that reflect their views. No one is cramming liberal news down their throats. You stated that you ". . . do not watch cnn, and do not read washington post." So obviously you're choosing WHAT to watch and listen to. |
But really, who LIKES Bush? |
They despise Bush because he loves his country and puts it before any others. He doesn't think the European countries are all that great, this reflects his worldview and of course Europeans won't like this. They want to believe they are better than us! |
Well, you're at least proving that they are better than WE ARE in grammar. |
While I have plenty to argue with the first a poster about her/his America-centrist views, I think the second poster is off-base on the grammatical issue. Aside from the question of tact in judging grammar on the net, I think "better than us" is a natural English construction, and any objection to it stems from prescriptive grammarians who tried to make English fit Latin rules. Of course, having criticized grammatical criticism, I am being totally inconsistent. Sorry 'bout that! ![]() |
The AP language teacher in me comes out roaring at times. So when I see a poorly written argument, I tend to nitpick. |
FYI, it is never PC to comment on spelling and grammar on DCUM. |
Well, stop it. Honestly, no one really cares about your desire to belittle the other poster. |
Since the first comment sounds rather apologetic, the second seems unnecessarily harsh. I suggest we all try to be a bit more forgiving in the new year. |
I think Bush represents everything people hate about Americans. Stupid, boorish, ignorant. Hypocritical (party boy now conservative). Cowboy. Doesn't seem to value the rest of the world, respect their sovereignty, does he even know which countries are which? Typically deceptive (self-deceptive?) American, pretending to be on the side of right, the side of God, actually fabricating evidence to further selfish American interests in foreign countries. Selfish, greedy American - consuming all we want (Kyoto treaty) while the world starves.
And for the rest of us to buy into it, not just once - I could understand (not agree with but understand) the opinions of my Republican friends when they said, "Oh, but he'll surround himself with excellent ADVISORS".... but TWICE???? To keep him in office after we KNEW, we SAW, what he was???? It's reprehensible! If only Jeb's state had awarded the election to Gore ![]() |
I like Bush, and I think he'll be vindicated in the years ahead. |
No, it does not sound a bit apologetic. |
Thank-you for your defense. I was the "grammatically incorrect" poster and I appreciate knowing that not everyone is judging my quickly written response as if it were an English assignment! |
I agree, it sounds smug and supercilious. |
