transitioning to a convertible car seat. Any tips? Please recommend your seat.

Sunshine Radian and Recaro. They both are designed to fit toddlers until they need to move to the booster. They both have steel construction and side impact. The Radian is narrower so it fits better in smaller cars. The Recaro is like a tank and is better for larger cars.

We tried two of the Britax models before settling on these two. I am just not a fan of the Britax hype and the fact that they have had a few recalls in the past is alarming considering they market themselves as the pros and the best in carseats. Plus, they did not fit well in either of our cars in the forward facing position.

I'd heard it was better to keep them backwards as long as possible but at the 1 year check up our ped told us we should switch her over to a forward facing one so she could look around more in the car (figuring she's learning by whatever she sees/takes in). She seems happier in the front-facing version too.

yeah, I was disappointed when they told us to keep DC rear facing until two (I was looking forward to him interacting with DC1 more while in the car) but safety trumps looking around and learning. Maybe your ped. hasn't heard the new recommendations yet. I hadn't heard them, either.
