Reading Langley HS Student Twitter accounts, drugs, F bombs, partying, middle finger pictures

First, whatever your kid puts out on the Internet, they will learn, both good and bad, what that entails. Pictures of a kid drinking, smoking, fake ID usage, etc = goodbye scholarships, goodbye possible govt security work, and having any job possibly taken away. Kids are kids, and they make mistakes. Parents need to be parents.

Next, what occurred at Langley isn't a function or by-product of wealth, higher society status, etc. As for poster 10:14, you went to a "white" school. I wonder how you define that? What about privileged? So, you took your kids to a more "diverse" school. Yet, your own words imply that wealth and economic success results in parent apathy, zero supervision, etc. So, will you ban your kids from getting college degrees? Because there is a very high correlation between education and economic success. Or will they just be compassionate enough to not become arrogrant, because of the way you taught them? Nice social engineering.

Chevy Chase, Yorktown, Langley---all had recent incidents of parents acted badly in press. Parents getting angry, kids throwing beer cans at Police Officers at house parties, a general class attitude that they are above the law and their shit doesn't stink. The access to designer drugs and the $ to get them is a problem--not just in this area...cousin had it bad at Greenwich HS in Connecticut. We saw it play out sadly at UVA. There is an acceptable level of poor behavior and a blind eye turned to drinking, violence, bullying, etc. "These are good kids".

My co-worker said he never saw more drugs than when he was at GDS. Of course--same can be said for very poor, inner city schools.

We have a high level of 'those type of parents' in our wealthy neighborhood, thankfully-not all. However, this group is not a 99% majority as it is at many of the homogenous schools people rave about. The kind that turn a blind eye and it's always somebody elses fault. The unlimited access to social media/internet/video games..and gifting it at a very young age without appropriate checks because 'why? my kids aren't like those other kids. we come from $, culture'. It is very much an entitlement problem. Being around kids that are trying to get ahead and thankful for what little they have has had a big impact on my kids in a positive manner. You can shit it on it all you want and call it 'social engineering'--but that is the same kind of attitude I saw at my HS.

Yup, you are correct; other then those 3 areas, nationwide, no poor parents act "badly". Only wealthy parents act like assholes. Good research. Also, I wasn't shitting on your profound conclusions, but, just shooting holes thru an incredibly weak argument. So, if all of "those" schools sent their "$, cultured kids" to the diverse school your kids attend, would it 'water down' the finished product? Would you pack up and move? You should apply to become head of the Dept of Education. And despite the fact you sound like an idiot, you would be perfect in such a govt role.

Stretching that argument a bit far.

But, thanks, I'll take the job. I'd love nothing more than to deal with parents like you on a daily basis.

Wait. The mom who got her makeup done with kids locked in the car was from Langley?

Actually, don't kid yourself: you are perfect for the job, since you are so convinced the way you think is 100% correct. And you wouldn't have to deal with the parents...you would probably ignore them.

As much as you ignore the fact of the culture of your school. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

And clearly stupidity isn't just a Lagley/Chevy Chase/Yorktown phenomenon, huh?

My conclusion: I would never send my kids to a school with those demographics. I would send my kids to a very good school with high academic achievement--but with socio-economic diversity. The pecking order, the mean girls, the 'bro-culture', the excess of drugs and zero supervision, the parent body that was arrogant.

We left the city because we would have been forced into doing private middle school and HS. The parent and student culture at these schools--like some of the affluent suburbs-- were not what we wanted for our kids. The elitisim, the turning a cheek, the extreme wealth with little supervision, the parents never admitting their kids could be in the wrong, etc.

We purposely chose one of the close-in VA HS that offers this compromise--lots of down-to-earth people with diversity. My kids see and our friends with kids that don't have all the benefits they do. It forces them to be compassionate, to be thankful, to open dialogoue, to be worldly and non-insular. It is a very good school. People try to trash it on these forums and I can't quite wrap my head around it. I think it may be that they chose to live in an area solely for the schools so if it looks like somebody that lives somewhere with more than that--they have to trash it.

Were you a bit insecure, jealous and feeling out of place in that privileged school?

Are you now feeling better because you're in the Haves-category and can 'look down' on others?

I think you may need to challenge your thinking a bit.

You people are a piece of work. I am so glad my kids don't go to school with douchebags that use such terminology.

Get back on Facebook, Honey.
