This is Common Core. It has shoved down math by one or two grades. |
The MCPS Common Core-aligned curriculum has Algebra I in eighth grade for on-grade-level math. So on-grade-level math used to be Algebra I in sixth grade? |
Why does someone need to post a list of all their previous research when they ask a question? To prove that their worthy of your response? It takes you longer to scold someone than it would to answer the question. OP, MAP-P is a computer based test that gets easier or harder depending on how the child performs. If your first grader got as far as the third grade section, then they were doing well, and you should expect their score to be on the higher end. They only kids who would be given third grade questions are those who showed mastery of second grade level standards. It's a nice tool because it lets you get a sense of whether your kids at the top and bottom are moving, without needing to have every kid sit through a test on every level. It's Common Core aligned, in the sense that skills are presented that align with Common Core, but it's not part of Common Core, because Common Core is just standards. However, many schools have switched to it with the switch to Common Core because they need to replace non CC-aligned assessments, and because they want kids to have practice with computer based assessments before the kids take PARCC, the CC aligned replacement for the MSA, in 2015. |
Shoving math "down" generally means taking something from an upper grade and moving it to a lower grade. Algebra 1 has long been an ninth grade course, although many kids have taken it early. CC moves it to eighth, so "down" a grade level. |
Oh, I apologize. I wasn't paying attention and mistook you for somebody who opposes the Common Core for making math too easy. That was silly. Obviously you are somebody who opposes the Common Core for making math too hard. |
I'm the PP right above you, but not the top PP, so I'm just explaining how I read the post. I'm also the PP of the post at 6:43 which was my first post on this thread. I'm also a pretty big CC fan. It's a fact that CC moves some expectations down a year, although I'd say "shove' is a loaded term to describe it. It's not true that the content the OP seems to be talking about is content that has been moved down because of CC. MAP tests kids on higher grade level content if they are ready. |
OP again - many thanks to the poster: 02/04/2014 06:43! |
No, the opposite. By "shoved down" the PP most likely meant "pushed to a lower grade". So, on-grade-level math used to be Algebra I in 9th, at least when I was in school (back in the Dark Ages, obviously ![]() |
