Current Parents Reaching Out

Minority parent of kids who go to different private schools here. This notion that bright minority kids are wooed and prized because of some "shortage" is ridiculous. There are PLENTY of full-pay, high SES minority families in DC (ours for one) and the top schools get plenty of minority applicants, many of whom don't get multiple acceptances despite their ability to pay full freight. Now, if the applicant has a great jump shot, that's another thing entirely . . .

Do schools actually do this? If so, which ones?

It's a somewhat recent campaign tactic, meant to compete with Sidwell especially for talented kids.

What does "manifestly Hispanic" mean? Can't you just say someone with melanin?!

Sheesh.

I don't think this happens until after letters go out and, even then, only at some schools.

OP here. Parents from two of the five school we applied to have emailed/called us. Tier 2ish schools. (No, I'm not naming them.) Our family is white, unconnected and completely unexceptional. The kid, however, has a really cool personality.

Hard to believe or you would name the schools. You could at least say whether DC, VA, or MD schools. K-8? JK-12? other?

based on what i have seen as recent school events, this doesn't surprise me at all. i expect it is true.

Oh, man, we're screwed. Knew I shouldn't have procreated with a white guy. Kids are brown but melanin free...sigh.

OP here. Neither school runs through 12. They are DC and MD.

That is helpful, OP. Thank you!

Parent tour guides will email parents on their tours to offer to answer additional questions. All parents attending will receive an email, not select parents. We also reach out to accepted parents.
