Oh my goodness, aren't we discerning. Ikea over a handcrafted antique. My, my.

Two estate sales places in Virginia are

4 Sales

Emerald Estates

They advertise about a week or two in advance of the sale. Google them and see what they have coming up in your area.

Also, go to neighborhood moving sales. People almost give away furniture to get rid of it.

No - the peasants make the furniture OP seeks.

Peg Leg Vintage just opened in College Park and is awesome for mid-century stuff. Just got a console/sideboard there. It's cheaper than Miss Pixie's.

Do you have any you particularly like? If it helps, I lean toward Art Deco and Traditional with clean lines (not ornate, but beautiful, rich woods)

Antique Row in Kensington will have lots of art deco. Howard Avenue both east and west of Connecticut. Lots of little shops.

Yeah, seriously unless you dealing with true antiques curated by a high end established merchant, why risk infesting your home to save a few bucks so your crappy bureau is old pine rather than new MDF.

We buy a few nice pieces from mid tier Pottery Barn style stores, but the daily use, going to get spilled on, drawn on, and generally abused furniture (you have kids, right? DCUM and all) we get from ikea.

Don't worry the off gassing from MDF will kill the bedbugs

Is this a joke? Paperboard over quality construction made at a time when carpentry was an art? What's wrong with you?

Hah like old furniture is not ride with lead paint, asbestos, and cigarette smoke.

I agree off gassing furniture is not the best, but you really have no idea what your getting into with used.

Chartreuse in Frederick - check it out on Facebook. They have monthly sales in a couple of enormous barns. Cool stuff.

I'm loving this pro-Ikea anti-used furniture nut. I could not disagree more. I'd rather have something old and interesting found off Craigslist/Miss Pixie's than something new (even from a high end store) almost any day. So much more interesting than the cookie cutter stuff in stores. And basing fear of old furniture on a fear of bed bugs or dirt is just weird. Like a table is going to have bed bugs? We're not talking about used mattresses.

Seriously! Also, I mean, you're allowed to like what you like. Me, I prefer the old stuff - as do lots of other people, which is why the prices are so high. Can get more interesting, eclectic stuff, in my opinion.

Great tip about checking Baltimore CL.
