No thank you. No way would I trust MCPS to be teaching my kids 'character'.
That is definitely a job for the parents. |
I'm pretty sure that civics is government-not character. |
| I think most teachers teach character: tell the truth-don't lie, don't cheat, respect others. |
| Simply follow the rules. That's all a school needs. By doing that you'll have honesty, respect, responsibility, kindness, etc. It doesn't need to be separate. Just foster a good community that stands on it's stated values and purpose. |
| Good character - do not lie, cheat, or steal - this does not need to be taught. If you're talking about shades of grey - who gets to decide what's "good" character? Why are they more moral than others? |
| 17:14 With many people, the laws of the government are the only "moral" laws they follow. |
| In some schools character education is the domain of the counselor. I think it's good to Have it at schools, some children do not get it at home. |
| The code of my child's school is "Respectful, Responsible, Ready to Learn." I think that is enough character education. Otherwise we get into stuff like "Christian Values," "American traditions," "Democratic ideals" and other indefinable and presumably universally shared (but not really) lofty goals. |
