Satisfying rant about Giant cashiers

Give me a break.

I wouldn't have a problem with your post if you hadn't used her name and her exact place of work. Obviously, since I'm posting anonymously I don't have a problem with anonymous posts. It's the use of someone's name and work location that is the issue. I think most people are smart enough to understand that.

I wanted people to know how rude xxxx was. I want everyone who goes to that Giant to be on the lookout for the rudest checker I've ever met. I want them in fact to deliberately screw up their scanner order and ask her to please remove items and see what she does. She'll start yelling at you to go back and get your chicken.

To be honest OP, your post made me think that you sounded far more obnoxious and rude than the cashier. Sounds like you have a huge sense of entitlement and a hefty dose of a condescending attitude.

I don't agree with the above poster. I appreciate the warning about the scanner and plan to boycott them at my local Giant.

No, I have a rather pragmatic notion that I am a customer.

I have a realistic sense that when a cashier is rolling her eyes at me for something which was not my fault, when I was completely civil and apologetic about not being able to get the contraption to remove an item, that that behavior is wrong. That it goes against the law of economics for a customer to willingly allow this behavior, when one can get organic milk and ice cream sandwiches down the road.

I will agree that my post was perhaps uber. That is why I called it a rant. Normally in life you just let those things go. And that's me 99% of the time. But when the supervisor turns to me and tells me, "Hold on! If you would wait for me to finish my sentence..." I think to myself, "Gracious me. What has become of this world when a poor civil customer like myself is being made to feel like a criminal?"

I suppose I do feel entitled. I feel entitled to the respect I have given out. Then, when I am confronted with unreasonable rudeness, I'm going to leave the items on the belt and post on DCUM. Anonymously.

And what has happened to the world when a person's name and identifying information like the store she works at can be accused anonymously by someone, and she's not here to defend herself. If you really have a problem with what happened, complain to Giant.

I'm curious: did you return the chicken to the refrigerator/meat aisle?

Anonymous
I think all the shit they do to make things easier makes things HARDER. If they opened the goddamn lanes and put a bagger at each one (a la the old days) there would be NO NEED for all these scanners and self-checkout and all this other bullshit that WASTES time and money.

God, I am officially my mother.

I never took the chicken FROM the refrigerator/meat aisle. I scanned it as it sat on the shelf. I tried to unscan it because I decided I didn't want it. It would not unscan. It was the first time I had used the scanners, because it was the first week they were in the store. I didn't realize that it would be impossible for the cashier to remove the item at the belt. If she had said, "I can't remove the item without the chicken here." I would have run back and gotten it (provided I could even identify it). But she didn't say anything nice at all.

Anyway, you know, it really was supposed to be a funny rant. I don't hate xxxx. I know she's underpaid. I know these scanners have added only more misery to a job that sucks. I was frustrated. I posted. Then I got policed. I'm not mad at the police either. They're probably underpaid and have some sort of new scanner added to their life too. We all do. Or maybe they are just perennially nice.

Happy holidays.

Ugh, OP. Do not apologize for that woman. I hate that "underpaid" excuse. I have some of the crappiest jobs in the world and was paid poverty level and was never rude to anyone (at least that didn't deserve it). People are free to get other jobs, but not free to be rude.

OP. Thank you for posting your comments. I have enough headaches at the Westbard Giant and don't need to add to them with additional problems. I will definitely be steering away from the scanners.

And I personally feel there is no need to justify or rationalize your posting. The real issue here is that you, as a Customer, were treated poorly. And this isn't just an isolated experience. Customer service at the Giant stinks. And has gotten a lot worse over the years.

I see nothing wrong with naming the store and the cashier's name. Perhaps if there were accountability in the world, the quality of service and commodities would improve.

Look, if XXXX has a problem checking out customers at Giant, then XXXX needs to check herself out of that job.

The difference is you knew it was temporary. These jobs, Giant cashier, Walmart stocker, hamburger flipper...they are supposed to be temporary jobs. You are not supposed to work your whole life in those jobs. It would all work out if everyone kept educating themselves and these jobs were rungs on the ladder. Then you wouldn't have to think about a living wage. It would be a stage of life wage. We have all had those jobs. And none of us have those jobs now.

And maybe the rudeness is related to not having any more rungs. Or having short ladders.

I disagree that these are "Temporary" jobs and therefore should be filled with indifferent short-timers.

My family is largely blue-collar. I posted earlier about my aunt who works her ASS off in the bakery of Stop and Shop (owned by Royal Ahold which owns Giant also). She's been there forever, gets in trouble actually with her union b/c she will work off the clock to get her stuff done -- a great and dedicated employee. My cousin is a produce mgr. there too. Honestly, they aren't interested in education or getting an office job. They want to work hard and get paid what they deserve. Now, it's increasingly hard for these fundamentally decent people to earn a living wage. And I'm sorry, there is a difference when you give employees the respect, dignity and yes, pay they deserve. It's sad that we've lost respect for honest work as a society.

Not everyone is cut out to get an MBA or a JD.

The produce mgr in my local safeway LOVES what he does. We talk a lot and he's super helpful, finding some dinged-up peppers in the back when they were out in the front of the store b/c I was making soup or steering me toward the good or new stuff. Generally, he's an unsophisticated guy, doesn't overintellectualize, but he's great at what he does and he's proud of it. Why shouldn't we reward that?

None of who?

I work in an ice cream store. Please don't assume everyone in the service industry is rude because they are stuck in dead in jobs and have no room for advancement. Rude people are just that. They don't need a reason. I have a very flexible schedule, paid vacation, sick leave and a great salary. Most days I feel as if I'm over paid for what I do. I am extremely happy with my job.

I run several stores in the area that I work in on a regular basis and I completely understand if that means you look down on me. But don't worry about it, I'll still be nice to you when you come by.

For what it's worth I hardly ever see great customer service in this area. I work in Chinatown a lot and hate going to any store in that area. It's never crossed my mind the the workers suck because of the job they're in. I usually just wonder why they were hired in the first place. But I know I am in the minority when it comes to thinking this way as I've noticed most customers feel you're beneath them. And I've run across many that treat you that way as well.

Well put.

There is never an excuse for rudeness, no matter what a person's job is!
