Lots of time that is just their way of saying that they won't pay for a relocation. If the job pays enough in a lower cost of living area (which FL is) and you get it, paying for a UHaul and maybe getting a few guys to help you move stuff will be worth it. Just apply -- you don't lose anything.

I wouldn't spend time/money on a business or school right now, but rather on a job search -- even locally, just keep an eye out for opportunities paying more.

Could your DH pick up shift work -- like possibly retail? That kind of supplemental income may be just what you need to feel like you have a bit "extra" for you D. Some of the big retail stores like Walmart/Target etc have an overnight shift for stocking shelves, so it wouldn't cost you anything in childcare.

I applied. They wrote back about local candidates

A two bedroom runs you about $1800 to $2400 and $1800 is a steal. I make $70k. Sometimes a little more. I keep making more $, but my boss keeps adjusting my commissions structure so I stay at $70k. I am actively looking. I could make more laterally, but want to get into about the $150k range...which doesn't seem impossible...just waiting for the right thing to come along anywhere in any country!

I make 29k and I went to college. You are making 70k and struggling? You may want sit down and figure out where all your money is going. I rent a one bedroom in a basement for my child and I, my child attends school now but I paid for daycare on my own. No help from the father or the government. It can be done. I would be rich if I made 70k. You are getting depressed from being on this site.

Are you close to 40? If I were in my early 20's i wouldn't be upset. Lol

You've already overcome many adversities. Have faith that you will be able to work your way through this as well.

It's temporary. You can achieve these modest goals step by step. Keep putting forth the effort, go easy on yourself, and measure time in years rather than days. You'll see more of a shift that way.

Wishing you all the best.

Years not days...ok!

You're making about what I make, as a Fed with an MS! Hang in there!

You may want to look into buying a home in DC from Manna. It has worked out great for us.

Not sure if they have already hired or if you just got an auto response, BUT if you got a response from an actual person recently and the job matches your skills, I would at least email back and fudge a little bit saying -- you aren't local yet but are planning a move to that area within a few months and think you could contribute x, y, z to their company. Who knows -- they could give you a shot to interview. At worst, they don't respond or still say no but what do you lose -- 10 min writing an email?

You are talking about Devon Parker. I doubt it's any consolation but he wasn't shot 15 times. You make a good income. Keep chipping at it. Chin up.

Your income is twice what I made as a social worker.

OP, sounds like you're having a tough time and it is particularly hard when you have a little one and you're struggling with money problems. Remember, it feels bad now but you are most likely making more money and have better prospects than many people in your neighborhood. Not that that makes things better for you now but it does mean that you can have hope for a better future once you get through this rough stretch. Hang in there!

I have to agree. I make 68k now but made about 20k less when DD was born a few years ago. OP doesn't have child care expenses. This isn't poverty living at all. Perspective is needed.

This isn't the 1980's so it's pretty easy to figure out when and where a shooting was in DC.

true - hadn't thought of that. no child care costs. you should be doing just fine. I made 75K while paying about $1000 a month for childcare. And we did okay. No there was no money for extras but we were just fine.
