Calm my nerves: has your child had a staph/ MRSA skin infection ?

My 6 month old just recovered from a bad scratch on his nose that turned into a staph infection. It was completely gone within three days using the prescribed topical cream. Our doctor wasn't concerned at all about it clearing up, and she was right! Phew.

OP, keep us posted on your son's condition. It sounds like you're doing everything right but this must be nerve-wracking. Hope he's feeling back to normal very soon!!

Thanks for the inquiries about my little guy. He's still not rounding the bend, but I'm holding on until later tomorrow for his ear to start looking better. It's still so raw and painful for him.

I just hope that the culture comes back regular staph, that he doesn't have a skin reaction to the sulfa in Bactrim, and that the antibiotic kicks in tomorrow. Thank God we live in an age of medicine that can stop infections. It's so scary that medicine is partly to blame for the strength of MRSA, or rather our own misuse of a full course of antibiotics. I will never allow my kids to miss a single dose of their antibiotics again.

Update: We took DS3 back in to the peds today because his fever went up. The good news is the wound is responding to Bactrim. The bad news is the culture bombed out and grew nothing; not regular staph, not MRSA. So though we'll never really know what he had, he is doing better and that's all that matters to me.

Now they think he's getting a viral infection but they aren't worried about staph anymore because his ear is healing nicely. Whew!

That was a bad week, for him and for me. Thanks for all the support and encouragement. I hope we never have to go through that again.

Happy to hear it! There's no terror quite like mom-terror! Glad you're out of it now.

I'm glad his infection is healing. My husband got MSRA, and he was undertreated and had to take his treatment into his own hands so to speak. He went to urgent care twice and the emergency room, but didn't get the right treatment that cleared him up until he saw an infectious disease specialist. That stuff is scary and can act so quickly.
