Not everybody can get into Michigan.

Agreed.

Perhaps the OP's friend is in a mixed marriage -- to someone not from an Ivy-League, perhaps even someone who went to a state school.

I can only hope my kid gets into Penn State!

- Signed Ivy League grad.

Is OP referring to us? Hubby and I both went to Ivy but DC is accepted by Penn State. We are all very happy about this acceptance. Don't see anything wrong with it scenario...

I just thought an overachieving family would...Oh hell. What do I know?
Dh went to Ohio State. I went to Georgetown. DH has the distinguished career. There's a lot more to it than the prestige of the label.

Ivy grad and I'd be happy for my kid, given her academic record to date, but to be honest I've cut all ties with Ivy past because it's just too painful to be around them and hear them talk at length about their own Ivy kids. I know it sounds shallow but I don't take condescension well.

DH went to an Ivy. We get together every three or so years with 5-7 families from college days. All have at least one parent who went to an Ivy, so far out of 8 children currently in college, none is going to an Ivy, although one is at a seven sister.

DH was a 3rd generation Ivy graduate- his generation has about 50% Ivy graduates. So far, out of 13 potential 4th generation students, none have gone to Ivies (although a few may go to an Ivy for Grad school in the future).

Even amoung Ivy graduates the majority of their children do not go to Ivies. There are plenty of great colleges out there.

Do you have a list of things which will not make you proud, even if your children are happy?

I am not sure PSU is the most cost-effective option for a DC area grad ($46K tuition + room+ board), but it all depends on the individual situation including any scholarships received, the strength and reputation of the program, and the person of student.
If $$$ are limited, it would be more efficient to use the alumni connection to get into an Ivy grad or professional school. Penn State is a fine, solid stepping stone to that.

Out of state tuition us $28-33k depending on year and major. Not cheap, but not 46k either.

Another Ivy grad here (U Penn). Wait, BOTH my kids have to get into Ivy League schools to impress OP? The first did but, like many here, I'll be thrilled if the second gets into Penn State. Guess I'm a failure as a parent!

Penn State is an excellent school. It's not easy to get accepted there either.
