Generally speaking, are salaried positions typically better than ones that pay an hourly wage?

I get paid hourly. I wish I was salaried because I have no leave time. I only get paid for hours worked, and my pay isn't a lot. The worst is when school is called off and I have to figure out how to work with my kiddo at home - I mostly work during her school hours. My husband hardly ever has a day off, so I get stuck scrambling with school closings.

It is flexible and I can somewhat set my own hours, but there are drawbacks.

Hourly is way better. Then no one really wants you to work overtime and if they do want you to work over 40 hours...you get paid for it!

The average compensation and working conditions may be better but there can also be seniority rules that make it harder to get a promotion or transfer, or ensure that more junior employees are the first to be let go of the company downsizes. Being a star worker won't make a difference under those rules.

Agree with this. Former union employee here.
