It is more than one loan - like 10 different loans variable interest rates for each loan, ranging from 5 - 14%. |

NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program

| Op, what is your salary? Is it possible to move to an area where pay is higher? Have you been able to secure an administrative position? In my helping profession, I make double what my peers make in other states. (90 grand vs 45 grand). While col is higher here...I could always live in a basement apartment if need be and cut costs. |
. I work in higher ed and I agree with you on the fancy health centers and other "amenities.". But endowments are not just some money you can use however you want -most of the overall endowment is smaller funds that are restricted by the donor. Plus, you only spend about 5% each year so that principal stays intact. There's a reason why even the mighty Harvard went on hiring freezes on 2008-09 - because their budget relies heavily on their endowment, and she the market collapsed, so did their endowment income and therefore, their budget. The real problem for public schools is the ever shrinking.portion contributed by the states. And all schools, public and.private, have ever growing administrative staffs, and the highest among them are often grossly overpaid. That said, there is also something to the notion that we need to counsel students and prospective students more wisely before they tale on these crippling debt loads. |
| OP here - salary is 70K. Low level nursing admin job. |
Why not counsel the lenders and force them to stop their scamming practices? This should be illegal. |
Looks like they will go to great length to deny relief in order to get repaid - http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/02/us/loan-monitor-is-accused-of-ruthless-tactics-on-student-debt.html?partner=rss&emc=rss&_r=1& |
Do you love your work? |
No, life is about choices. You go to a more affordable school, you find an employer who will help with tuition assistance, etc. When you took the loans, you know you will have to pay them back. That is what a loan is about. |
|
I feel for you somewhat. But you had to know that "private" school of any nature was going to be more expensive then public. I think even 17 yr olds get that concept.
As for getting rid of the debt - charge your living expenses on credit card but continue to pay your loan then declare bankruptcy to clear your credit card debt? Not saying it's a great or good solution but it is a solution. |
OP, do you live in the DC area? $70K is really low for nursing admin jobs here. Any way you can pick up an agency shift here and there? I just signed up with a local agency and the starting hourly rate is $46 an hour. You can work shifts on weekends and holidays to put a dent in your loans or make extra payments toward the principal. I feel for you-- I'm currently enrolled in an expensive MSN program and hoping to have loans paid off by the Nurse Corps for working with vulnerable populations. Good luck! |
| Which of our politicians allowed this crime? They should be named. |
|
OP, how did you end up with all private loans instead of federal loans, may I ask? Federal loans have some better repayment options.
It may be worthwhile to try to negotiate your payments. Have you tried? |
This exactly. I do not understand the people who are angry they have loans to repay? A person has a right to despise the money they owe of course but how can you be angry or surprised when it is time to pay back what you knowingly borrowed. Also, why should they make a deal to lower the payments? If you were the one lending out the money wouldn't you want all of it paid back? I do not understand these people! |
I know the sentiment seems harsh, but I also agree. There are options besides taking out exorbitant private loan amounts. Good luck, OP. |
