Private school to Janney

And the teachers still have a curriculum to follow. I'm s EOTP parent who had my child at a jklm school. They were still better than my IB school since my child was an "above average" student compared to the rest of her classmates in our IB school.

I think that's the thing, it is hard for even the best dcps to be on par with the outstanding suburban schools. This is NOT just a question of demographics. You can't just make a school top notch by enroll ing kids with educated parents. Pretty good maybe, but not stellar.

And it's hard to make even the outstanding suburban schools on par with the good privates because the teachers still have a set curriculum to follow and are not allowed to deviate. At least this is how the program at our MoCo school left us feeling.

Shouldn't then the curriculum be better than it is? why does it have to be bad in DC? In US?

Totally agree-- and class size privates. Reality is most people can't afford privates.

"So high SES doesn't necessarily correlate to a rigorous program. Are the families finally realizing the emperors (JKLMM) have no clothes?"

My Janney kid has tested 1.5-2 grade levels above where he's at, and the Janney curriculum challenges him. (And given than 2/3 of the Janney kids test at an accelerated level, he has many peers at his level.) Janney does have a big focus on "catching up" all kids during 1st and 2nd grade because the curriculum becomes more challenging in 3rd and they want to make sure everyone has the basic skills in place. As well, the curriculum isn't standard DCPS curriculum because it is an autonomous school.

That said, I hope OP doesn't come to Janney because I don't want to see class sizes increase.

WOW. blatantly that selfish that you are trying to discourage someone who wants to be your neighbor. that is pretty sad. OP, I would ignore this poster as there are likely many wonderful families at Janney who would love to welcome you. this one family will not ruin Janney.

So, maybe you should stand on the street corner with a placard, "No room at the inn". That will really help your real estate values. Sounds like you add a lot of good karma to Janney!

OP here...the honest, even responses are very helpful, thank you. Though DS isn't an outlier, I do appreciate the acceleration he's been given in our private school, and I will have to look into the curriculum/teachers in the 3-5 grade range at Janney to see if there is differentiated instruction. Any thoughts on this specifically? Experience?

As far as the MoCo public schools though, I haven't heard stellar things or much difference btwn them and the WoTP schools to be honest. Unless your child tests into the GT programs, I think the WoTP schools and MoCo elems are comparable for the most part.

Thanks for all of the helpful responses.

My DD goes to Deal and her best friend goes to Westland (a BCC feeder). Honestly, I don't see any notable differences in terms of curriculum and academic press.

Both Westland and Deal have IB programs.
