improving credit score to 750 + from 742

If you want to improve your score, DO NOT close any credit accounts. It decreases your total available credit so it changes your percentages and therefore will lower your credit score. Just keep them open and don't use them.

OP this is a prime example of why you shouldn't listen to random people about improving your credit score. There are SO many myths and half truths that persist about the subject. And EVERYONE is an expert, regardless of what the actual rules/laws are regarding credit. If you want to take credit advice from strangers, do it on the FICO message boards. At least what the advice they give has been proven.

In this case, why do you care so much about your credit score? Sounds like you don't really need any more credit in the near term, right?

Actually, PP's advice was spot on. What the hell is your problem?

I just got a mortgage. I was told that "excellent" was 740+ and that companies that tell you it's 785+ or whatever are just trying not to give you the best interest rates.

Companies can set whatever standards they like. If they want 785 for best rates, so be it.

I have seen that American express balances have a large impact on my monthly score. If I have a 0 balance prior to the report, it jumps up significantly.. I use to use It for any of my monthly expenses that I could, but when I stopped using it, what a large jump my score went up...
