Really high gas bill this month- normal for a house this size?

Normal. I have a 1000sf rowhouse that's not the worst-insulated but isn't the best either. I've had over $200 some really cold months.

If it continues to be high, have them check things out. BGE is our provider, and for six months billed us 5 times our actual usage because of a broken smart meter. Because they couldn't tell how much we actually used our gas was free for a while...but spending hours and hours on the phone with BGE wasn't worth it. Bottom line, if there seems to be a problem, call.

Sounds about right, sorry op

I would check to make sure it's not an error. They do make mistakes reading the meters sometimes.

I have a 1,500 SF cape built in the 40's with a full basement and about half new windows, half older ones. We keep the heat at 67/68 all the time. My bill is typically as low as $30 during the off-season and it rarely goes above $110-$120 during the winter.

I feel better about my 6000 SF new house only costing 330 electric total + 80 gas a month to heat in the winter.

Perfectly normal for an older house. It will be higher for Jan if temps are normal.

Thank you everyone for the thoughtful responses! I called Washington Gas and it seems our bill is in line with the house's history - around $200+ during winter months. In addition, I have 2 insulation guys (with great reviews on angie's list) visiting this week for free consultations on insulating the house better. We also have the temp up high throughout the day (I work from home) and night and we could program our thermostat a bit better.
Thanks!!

We are in the 300-400 range most cold months for our 2k SQ FT uninsulated 1930s house in NW. Is what it is.

OP, you'll be amazed at the difference some additional insulation will make.

Just don't let them talk you into "blown in" insulation in the attic.

Ask them about Roxul. it's awesome. My husband put some in our attic, and it's made a big difference in holding in the heat.

Count up the Heating Degree Days (HDD) and use that to compare the months and you therms per HDD.

+1 my gas bill was $28 in October and $92 for the last billing cycle. (Yes, my house is much smaller than yours).
