Your comment was vague. You should have said how it tasted differently than the usual - was the fish bad? Too spicy? Too bland?

Bad is not something that he can fix really. He may have thought you just didn't like it.

Oh, no, you didn't? Well what did you expect? Your waiter is making minimum wage and living off tips - why would he go out of his way to help?

All the more reason to be more attentive. They don't even make minimum wage...more like $2.50 plus tips. However, good servers make pretty decent money especially if they work in the right restaurant.
