Federal employees - ever asked to reapply for your own job?

I don't work for the Feds but this happened to me in a merger. They axed everyone. The interviews, from an HR perspective, was to cover their ass. Start looking for a job.

It happened to our whole office during a reorganization. They gave us the org chart with names in each spot as "acting" then they proceded to announce each job internally and giving people jobs as an FTE.

Most people just applied for the job they were assigned.

A few people did not and either applied for another job internally or elsewhere.

Some (me) where basically "displaced" but I asked for some training classes and applied to new positions that were created during the reorg.

It was a big mess. Everybody ended up with a job at the same pay (or higher).

Feds can't just decide to do this at random. It would have to be at least agency-wide. OPs employment status is secure, but the particular task s/he's doing may not be.

No wonder the government is so bloated.
