IRS keeps sending me different from past returns saying I owe money & they are wrong each time

Bullshit. IRS doesn't work that way. Far more likely to be random computer error or mistaken identity/identity theft. IRS personnel are too professional for what you are suggesting.

Sorry, but it does and has. Some years ago the City Paper ran an expose about a woman who was aggressively targeted for audit even though she was earning something like $15,000 a year. It turned out that she had briefly dated and spurned someone who worked at the IRS who was behind it all.

OP, this happened to me a couple of years ago for state taxes. They said I never filed and I owed about $800, plus about another $1500 for late fees. I produced copies of my return and fought it - took almost a year to resolve, to the point where DH wanted me to just give up and pay them. In the end it turned out they actually owed me about $200, but I never saw a dime of it. They just sent me a letter saying the case was closed. I think they are aggressively going after every potential penny they can and they know lots of people will just pay to avoid the hassle.

This happened to us too. My dad actually worked at the IRS, had a stroke and went on retirement. He was in a nursing home and we had huge itemized deductions based on medical expenses. The IRS audited him three times and we owed nothing! It was really horrible especially considering he had worked there for 25 years. Also I would mail them letters that they would not acknowledge so I realized quickly that everything you send them must be by certified mail. I have no idea why the PP is saying they are so professional- I found them impossible to deal with and I'm an attorney.

disgusting how much money do they actually recover vs spend on attempting to fraudulently recover small amounts.

I think they should be held liable and should be sued and compensate the victims with pain suffering and lost work hours.

I can't stand them. I put my checking and routing numbers in correctly last year when I went to pay and they said they were incorrect. They tried to stick me with all these fees and interest charges, but I got them all taken off. Just ridiculous when I had the correct checking numbers to begin with. I spent hours dealing with this on the phone because NO ONE answers.
