Good schools don't do that kind of thing. Way overrated and just an average school. They have zero Nobel alumni and the most influential alumnus is a basketball player who would probably flatline an sat test taken 1 day after he received his " degree".

So sorry that UNC rejected your DC... or you....

Didn't apply unc. Sucks in STEM... You know .. The hard majors. See if you can name one invention, one big company created , or one Nobel won by a graduate of the University of No Classtime .

Huh. I'm a UVA grad and I'd definitely put Michigan on the same level as UVA, and definitely better than UNC. Better for some people because it's such a large research university. I did know some out of state students at UVA who hadn't been accepted to UNC though. UNC is apparently really tough to get into from OOS.

Times change. USNEWS doesn't agree with you http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/spp+50

Geez, UM is a couple of spots lower on one list.

Here's aranking that puts UM 98 spots above UVA: http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2012-13/world-ranking

Big deal. They're definitely on the same level.

Right - and University of Minnesota is above Brown on the list you cited - USNEWS is the gold standard.

Oh look, it's the Maryland troll

OP wasn't asking about College Park and U. Md. is not a school that generates much interest on DCUM. Please take your boosterism elsewhere.

Lol at Unc graduating these people and then saying "we are a good school"!
Good schools don't even consider lowering standards to zero.

If you guys think that stuff doesn't happen at EVERY SINGLE UNIVERSITY you are kidding yourselves. And I mean EVERY school. They just don't all get caught. I'm sure you'll all be like, blahblahblah, that wouldn't happen at Dook/Harvard/Wesleyan/Swarthmore. You'd be wrong. Maybe not about Swarthmore, but seriously, they had their own headline issue this spring.

I had a great experience at UNC. It's a very well-rounded school. I thought my professors were good. I felt very well prepared for the real world and am doing well professionally. I would be extremely pleased if my kids were admitted and chose to attend. I do believe that tuition costs have increased significantly.

I am from NC originally and I would send my kid to JMU or some random SLAC before I paid out-of-state tuition for UNC. It's a good enough state school, but it's just that, a state school, and not worth private school tuition.

Lol... This is what bad schools use for an excuse when it's proven that they suck. No good school lowers standards to zero and graduates people who do no work in order to cheat. Only unserious institutions do that .

Keep on believing that.

I went to UNC (many, many years ago) and I am mortified at this athletic scandal. I'm still proud of the fact that I got in out-of-state (I'm from NoVa, and had no legacy ties), and I got a great education and graduated early, job in hand.

But this athletic grade scandal is the kind of thing I thought happened only at other schools (SEC, I'm looking at you!). It has definitely lowered my alma mater in my eyes. They need to take major steps to fix these issues--especially the hit to their reputation.

Debating the merits of attending UNC is pointless, for the out-of-stater, unless you're already admitted. Admit rates are very, very low for oos. Save your energy. Apply if you want, evaluate later.

They are only allowed to let in 18% from OOS. The OOS overall have higher GPA's and test scores. Many people at UNC would like to allow more OOS students in because they have to pass up such good candidates for instate students. Other schools like Michigan and Wisconsin have a much higher percentage of OOS students 30-40% for a more balanced student body. California is at 10% because they have such a large population to begin with to choose from instate.
