It has changed TREMENDOUSLY since then. When I was growing up, that's what it was. Now, it graduates more people of color and women in STEM then any other university in the country. The President is freaking amazing and a visionary. Johns Hopkins has been begging him to come for years and he just refuses.

I think it's great that it graduates so many people of color and women stem majors and I think it's high time this happened, however this doesn't necessarily make it a good school. It makes it a visionary, progressive school.

I do a lot of hiring for my company for CS majors. The kids coming out of UMBC are really good, and have received a very good education. For CS it's an excellent school.

I hear there's a lot of emphasis on good teaching. Also they have a nationally ranked chess team.

Always seemed to me to be a good value but I couldn't get dd to consider it.

More than any other university in the country? That makes it a good school. A great school, actually. (Not sure why you don't think "visionary" and "progressive" go along with "good.")

It's good in a different way. It doesn't make it academically strong, necessarily.

But if you read this thread UMBC IS academically strong. Its as if you are saying that just because they graduate so many students of color in STEM programs that they can't be academically strong.

Not to mention whats so visionary or progressive about graduating a lot of students of color? Progressive schools are usually schools with alternative academic approaches (Hampshire, Sarah Lawrence, Bard).

UMBC is a fantastic school, but their most successful alum are forced to be discrete about what they do - so you don't hear about them.

UMBC is the honors part of the UMD system, no?

No. There are honors colleges at both UMD CP and UMBC.

My brother went there and went to work for PWC.

OMG. I have just written in another thread. My really high achieving kid is insisting that UMD (both cp and bc) and Towson is where undergrad premed will be done, followed by top med school. I am feeling sick with anxiety...but DC is completely zen about it. I probably go and check and see how it will work out.

Well your really high achieving kid could probably get into a better school but if you live in MD you can't beat the price.

I think that is DC's concern. Worked out how much will be needed for med school, and since we will be paying, DC does not want to run out of funds. As long as they send kids to top med schools I should probably not be too concerned?
