| DS has been doing raz kids (raz-kids.com). It was recommended but his 1st grade teacher. The program reads the book, the kid reads it then takes a quiz. Points are awarded which you can use to buy robots and such to put in a picture. DS loves it and it motivates him to read. |
| LMB would not be helpful for comprehension. Is ADHD a possibility? If decoding is good, ADHD can often be a cause of comprehension problems. If so, please check out this website: http://www.chadd.org/ |
You're thinking of Seeing Stars, which is decoding. Visualizing & Verbalizing is for comprehension: http://www.lindamoodbell.com/programs/visualizing-verbalizing.html |
| So how does one find a non-center based tutor that is trained in the Visualizing and Verbalizing method? |
That website states they sell licenses per classroom. Did you pay for the whole classroom rate on your own or did you pool with other parents or some other method? |
| Recommend a tutor with a reading background. Programs don't teach kids to read, skilled and trained reading teachers teach kids to read. |
Yes, a quality tutor helps but not all programs are created equal. Kumon for example is largely based on rote memory as is Huntington, Sylvan, etc. That's why O-G, Phonographix, and LMB would be preferable. |
Agreed about factory tutoring services like Huntington, etc. beging a waste of money... But the other ones you mentioned are still programs trying to sell a product. Research shows best intervention in analytical. You need some one tell you the defiits with your kids and then create a program specifically targeted to your child. Not some one sized fits all BS. I think people recommend those programs because they have spent so much money with them (I think a summer with LMB is $12,000?!?!) they want to feel like they are the best and truly exceptional. The best is a highly skilled tutor. Research proven. I'd ask teachers at your kid's school. Ask about their reading background. |
| I'm looking for someone who can help my child think more while reading. Visualizing is part of it, but I'm Just as interested in helping my child stop and ask questions to themselves, write notes while reading, ask questions before reading, that sort of thing. Is there a program or book out there to teach a child this? |
