Who has had success with IUI, and if you did, how many times did you do it?

I'm not sure what my insurance is going to pay. I've had Empire BC/BS through my employer for ages, but due to rising costs, they've dropped BC/BS and we are having Cigna next year. I'm not sure what their coverage will be. With BC/BS, I would have been responsible for a 10% copay for IUI or IVF.

I'm previous poster from 12/4/13 15:00. Used injectibles (though a low dose) and pregnant with a singleton.

In happy to say that my last IUI worked, I'm only 18 dpIUI though, so not in the clear yet. This was our 6th IUI. We used all injectables.
My insurance covered up to 6 IUI's, so we were exhausting all of those before going on to IVF (and paying out of pocket).
This last IUI we increased all my meds and I responded really well. I don't think most people try IUI's as many times as we did. If you're paying out of pocket for everything I would suggest going straight to injectables for a month or two. Clomid did nothing for me.

Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

I am this poster. I don't know how many I have yet. My first u/s is in 2 weeks, I'll let you know.
For me, this was my 4th round of injectables. I had one lead follicle and two good size followers. I had one more that may have caught up with the trigger. I have always had 2-3 good follicles and not had any pregnancies. This time I had 3, maybe 4 and got pregnant. Multiples was out number one concern. Had we gotten 5-6 follicles then the cycle would have been called off. Given my history of failing IUI's we were not concerned with 3-4 follicles.

I'm surprised to hear your doc questioning injectables.

We had the same diagnosis. I did 9 IUIs - got pregnant on 4th, then miscarried at 9 weeks, then got pregnant on 8th, then miscarried at 12 weeks, then pregnant on 9th time. Final pregnancy resulted in DD. I was 40 and 41 at the time. Injectibles for all but the first 3 (clomid was useless for me and made me really moody).

I did IUIs for both of my children.

34 - 1st IUI - used all injectables - single pregnancy
36 - 2nd IUI - used all injectables - single pregnancy

A similar story. Pregnant with a singleton, using injectables, at 40. Our 2nd try.

My guess is that your age is the reason they want you to go straight to IVF. After 35, your eggs greatly diminish in quality. My guess is that that's the "unexplained" reason of your infertility. Your chance of getting pregnant may be decent, but your chance of having a miscarriage is extremely high. With IVF, they'd only implant the healthiest looking embryos that made it past a certain point. If you do the math, IVF might actually cost less than doing IUI several times.

That's seems crazy. Tons of people use injectables. What would you use otherwise? Just Clomid?

I'm 8m pregnant now with one baby after three IUIs (with injectables - Gonal-F and Ovidrel).

Thanks everyone! OP here. DH and I had decided to go forward with IUI after the holidays were over...but I found out on Christmas morning that I'm PREGNANT!! We were both utterly shocked.

We are trying to not get our hopes up too much until I'm farther along though.

Best Christmas present EVER!!!

I was also told that I had unexplained infertility. I decided to wait before doing any treatment and I got pregnant without help.

Sorry that you are dealing with this. FWIW, I have had two healthy babies after IUIs. My diagnosis was "ovulatory dysfunction" - weak ovulation or PCOS-lite as I understood it. For my first, I was 32 and did Clomid, got pregnant on the second IUI. For my second, I was 37 and it took five IUIs. After trying clomid a bunch of times, we moved to injectibles (Bravelle). The RE at Shady Grove was recommending IVF but we would not have been able to do that until the start of the new year when we could change insurance to get some coverage. So we did that last chance IUI cycle and it worked.
