How common is it to gain less during your second pregnancy?

I gained 35 pounds with #1, but am already gaining weight at a faster pace. Hoping to stay under 40 pounds with this current pregnancy.

My stats don't bear out any of your premises.

Baby #1, gained 55lbs, baby weighed 9lb.
Baby #2, my pre pregnancy wait was about 10lb lower than with #1 (though healthy BMI both times), gained 30lb, gave birth to very healthy 11.5lb baby.

No gestational diabetes, just a healthy mother and healthy baby. For me, yes, I gained less during my second pregnancy but I also had a MUCH bigger baby.

OP here. Thanks for the replies. This confirms my understanding that weight gain doesn't strictly predict size of baby. I'm okay with aiming to gain a little less this time, but I'm not going to hold my breath and hope that means baby will be smaller.

btw - I gained 40 lbs and had an 8 lb baby last time. I started out a healthy weight but I'm very small and my first practice thought I should gain a little more than the average woman.

I gained a little more the second time, but started out less, so ended up at about the same weight with both pregnancies (gained 29 pounds the first time, 32 the second). First baby was 7 pounds, 1 ounce, second was 7 pounds, 15 ounces.

What did you do differently? I gained 40 lbs too, and hoping to gain less this time!
