That's great! |
Presumably the latter more than the former? |
| I'm 44 with $420K in 401K/IRA, but almost $500K in taxable investments that I intend to use for retirement. |
| We are both 33, with $200k total saved in various retirement vehicles. |
|
Rainy Day account - $56K
My IRA -I'm 48 - $184K - IRA DH - 53 - $233K - IRA DH 401K - $30K, (new job) he maxes out DH - deferred comp - $100K but it increases each year. We own two rental props which we will eventually sell which will help fund retirement as well. My parents own 6 rental props inside the beltway - they are mortgage free - there are 3 siblings, the props will be split amongst us an probably sold. that will add about $2M to my inheritance after split with 2 other siblings. Intention is to pass that money on to our two children for future home purchases for them. |
| 39 - 310,000....and a teacher! Got an early start thanks to my Dad nudging me. |
| We are almost 40. I have $202k and DH has $425k. . In total we have $627k. I feel like we aren't saving enough for our retirement. We do have a couple of rental properties that are free and clear so that would be income coming in when we are old or else we could always sell it to help the kids with college or fund our retirement if we need the money. |
OP here, thanks, interesting perspective. Why do you think you dont have enough to be on track. When do you plan to retire and how much do you think you will need? |
| 32. I have about $130k, thanks to some very generous profit sharing from my employer (and my contributions, of course). |
| 42. About $140k. DH has about 20k in IRa because he hasn't been FT until past two years. My income was about 40-50k until recently. Now close to 100k HHI. |
I guess I feel like in this area, it's not that much money for retirement. We don't plan to retire till about 65 years old. I was a SAHM for 6 years and that's why my 401k is only 202k. I had contributed to a Roth IRA during that time but it was no where the amount of the 401k. So now I've been maxing the 401k contribution for me. He's always been maxing out for it. I think also, there was a thread earlier that other people had put down the amount they had in their 401k. Mine just doesn't seem that much (given how expensive it is in this area). |

At 36 and 39 we have about $250K in 401Ks (or equivalent accounts). Another $115K in Roth IRAs. Assuming the federal government pension system doesn't crash, I will also get a pension.
We have no intention of continuing to live somewhere with this cost of living after retirement. |

I thought Fidelity's rule of thumb was helpful:
"Save at least 8 times (X) your ending salary to help increase the odds that you won’t outlive your savings during 25 years in retirement.…For example, by age 35, Fidelity suggests that you should have saved 1X your current salary, then 3X by 45, and 5X by 55." https://www.fidelity.com/viewpoints/personal-finance/8X-retirement-savings |
