As a general rule, I think it makes sense to start with your public school with IEP and see how that goes. We started in private and it becomes very intimidating to consider switching back.
We made the opposite choice, KTS (a private) in pre-K through 1st grade, and it served us very well. Got intensive support right when we needed it, and was better equipped to transfer to a good mainstream school starting in 2nd grade.
I do agree however with the poster quoted above; there is a real danger of the private track becoming self-perpetuating. It never seems like the right time to switch back, and the longer one stays, the more a label seems to get stuck on your child's forehead. Even though we knew we had a very strong candidate, we got rejected at a few private schools (I have no doubt because of the label) before getting our chance at moving out into a good school, and now our child is at the front of an excellent mainstream class. But it was touch and go getting there -- I really had to push and push, both inside the family and with schools, to get the switchback to occur.
