to disclose or not to disclose biomedical--how open minded are developmental pediatricians?

Hi OP- I think it's like many things in life... you have to choose your battles! I've been following the guidance of a MAPS doctor and seeing lots of improvement in my LO. If any of my child's doctors try to criticize my approach, I only need remind them of how far my child has come with biomed! Interestingly, I've found that SN parents can be as narrow minded about biomedical as some of the docs. I want so badly for them to know that our kids have underlying medical issues that can and do get better, but I've learned that you can't win those battles. If parents, teachers and other docs are going to see the light, they will first have to open their eyes. My DC's ped is somewhat dubious and has checked the credentials of our biomed docs (always admitting that these are MDs that graduated from top universities). I appreciate her because she openly admits that she ignorant of how to best treat/manage autism but stands behind our decisions. I do hope I can convince her to get MAPS certified because their is such a dearth of knowledge about how to manage the underlying medical issues associated with autism. BTW, I'm so impressed that you've been following Amy Yasko's guidance. That's an area where I really need to educate myself!

Mine thinks alternative approaches are hog wash. I let him handle the medical and consult with others about alternatives. I do inform him of vitamins and supplements.

That makes me sad. It's so easy for traditional medical doctors to be dismissive of integrative medical practices because that's the easy out - it saves lots of time and effort because they never have to crack a book again after graduating medical school. Good for you for not letting their ignorance stand in your way.
