We alternate between Christmas and Thanksgiving with my sister. We used to alternate the other years with DH's family, but that stopped when his father died and his mother 's dementia cause her to be in a locked assisted living center- we would do things with her though. Since then we have spent every Christmas with my parents - so they won't be alone and because my mother's birthday is that same week.
We invite DH's siblings to Thanksgiving every other year and only one has consistently come. We tend to get together on the off years during the Christmas week- but not on Christmas. |
We don't alternate. We go from one family gathering to another and the driving distance is 2 hrs. Two hrs from A to B. And then from B to C is 2 hrs. From C to A just 30 minutes. Or my family usually accommodate to us, do it one day after a holiday. This is totally ok for Xmas.

We alternate Thanksgiving and Passover but when we do Thanksgiving, we usually try to hit up the other side of the family as well. Distance is about 3-4 hours apart. This is mainly because my FIL's birthday is always around Thanksgiving and he'd be hurt if we didn't see him. I think this is going to come to an end now that we have a newborn. It is just too hard to travel to NY and Philadelphia and back to DC over 4 days. This year they're all coming to us but I think from now on we will just straight-up alternate, not try to see both families in the same weekend. |
