High-Level Reader Question

Is your child not at an HGC? I think the pp is right that most HGC students are at a Z and are accomondated.

Yes. At HGC. I don't think kids at our school are grouped.

Just wondering how schools will continue to handle deeper analysis with a kid like this. After all, HGC is only 2 years.

Did you ask at the conference? I asked whether they were grouped. The teacher said not exactly by level since they are all such strong readers but that certain students need more help with specific aspects and that she will group that way. If your child is at an HGC I think that they will be fine. I wouldn't worry about middle school until 5th grade.

I was talking to a 2nd grade teacher who had a student reading on level W. She pointed out that even if a kid can comprehend texts 3 grade levels ahead of her, she still could benefit from developing more comprehension skills using easier texts.

Remember that the reading level tests are just asking kids to read a short passage and ask some quick questions and that extrapolates they can read whole books at that level. But they still need more instruction in comprehension strategies.
