Go for the promotion while pregnant or stick with comfort zone?

I am in the same position, OP! The manager's job is open and it has my name written all over it. Several people have been telling me for a while that they see in that job. The trouble is that I had a terrible first trimester and had to disclose my pregnancy quite early on (before the position opened) to account for being late in the morning and sleepy throughout the day. Now I am feeling better, but word of my pregnancy has gone all the way up to the president. I am so torn. I would love to apply but have to be realistic too. In the jurisdiction where I live, we have very generous maternity leave periods and I will likely be off for 10 months or more. That would leave me in the manager's role for about five months before I went off, leaving the company with a big hole for an extended period.

Not an easy decision.

Applying is not accepting. Seems to me that your decision is easy at this point: do it. Through the application/interview process you will gain information that will aid in the real decision, which is whether to accept it if offered.
