acid reflux / late pregnancy

By the way, a lot of GERD sufferers find that eating apple helps. They even discuss which brands of apple (Fuji vs. Rome) work best. It helps me a lot. Saltines in the morning before getting up helped too.

I assume you have tried Zantac and/or Prevacid? I had awful heartburn and those worked for me.

Also, reflux showing up at the end of pregnancy can be a larger issue (pre-e) so definitely mention it to your doctor if you haven't already!

Link please? I have never heard this before. I thought that reflux at the end of pregnancy is totally normal because the baby is crowding your digestive organs more as he gets bigger.

It can be normal but some people don't mention it to doctor (http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/preeclampsia) and thing heartburn/reflux is nothing. Odds are its just baby pushing everything but if you've gone all pregnancy without it until now, it doesn't hurt to bring it up. A few posters on DCUM previously said they had this as part of their pre-e diagnosis.
Again, not saying this is the case at all!! But so many people come on here it is worth mentioning

And I know reflux sucks. My baby will likely have a giant head of hair.

Where in that link does it say acid reflux is a sign of preE? Or are you talking about where it says sometimes women mistake upper right abdominal pain related to PreE for heartburn? Those really aren't the same.

OP here - interesting - this is the only thing on this thread I haven't tried or heard of - I have done the apples thing, and related, is the apple cider vinegar - neither do much for me (regardless of which type of apples). I've had GERD before, and actually, selzer water sometimes helps me. It makes me burp, which can really help, and sometimes it cuts mucous and soothes my throat. Toast also soothes the throat and carries some of the mucous down in a similar way. It doesn't reduce the heart burn, but it does take care of some related / additional symptoms and doesn't seem to make anything worse. Plain water is worse than anything else for me - carbonated is much better, again, does not avoid, but doesn't worsen.

As for Pre-E, I know what heartburn feels like and this is definitely it. And who says it is not common to get heartburn toward the end of pregnancy? It definitely is. The progesterone slows your metabolism down, the relaxin causes your esophageal valve to loosen and let acid flow both ways, and the baby pushes the contents of your stomach up - very normal to develop it at the end (even if you're lucky enough to avoid it sooner).

I'm so over it... In any case, I've had the heartburn since day 1, it's just way worse now that things are so crowded in there.

Not green - I'm the longtime refluxer who recommended the dropping acid cookbook - red apples are supposed to be better in general. I love green apples, so I mix them in with oatmeal, which makes them tolerable for me.

Everyone reacts differently to things though, so what should work for one person might be horrible for another.

I get reflux mostly after eating and chewing gum for 30 min helps. I read that the saliva generated by the chewing counteracts the acid.
