Furloughed Contractors -- Is your company paying you?

Anonymous
I am a contractor. We are allowed to take vacation leave if we have it and thus still get paid.

We've just gotten word that fuloughs might be implemented if this continues beyond next week (into a third week). My company has about 1/3 of employees affected by stop work - we're losing millions of dollars every week.

My company announced that, because of the shut down, all indirect people are to take two days off next week...charge no more than 24 hours. I am direct, and for those that are direct, it is work, LWOP, or PTO.

Too soon to tell what will happen if this goes on longer.

Ptob isn't free - it impacts our overhead rates. We have a leave sharing bank that was closed to donations last year because there were so many hours, but I'm hoping they open it up and people are allowed to use it. But for now they want people doing something.

I'm covered - for now. But I work in operations so if the rest of the company is cut there will be cuts in operations.

Do you work for one of the larger contractors in the area? Did your leadership think about contingency plans, in ADVANCE? I'm super curious about the variety of responses from these companies and what it says about the company culture. It seems like many companies, the greedy ones, don't even try to figure out how to keep you covered or provide furlough codes. They just furlough or give you the option to use your leave.

It would be nice for people to note which companies they work for and the policy they have in place to address the shutdown.

Booz Allen.

Last week those of us impacted were charging to indirect/admin/training hours. We'll need to make up those hours over the course of the next year.

This week we are all required to take PTO.

Starting the third week we can continue to use PTO until we reach zero balance, or immediately furlough status. Once PTO is exhausted, we'd enter furlough.

Thanks to sequestration, Booz Allen's done a lot of pre-planning to position themselves in a fiscally responsible way.

That being said, like any business, no company in the business of making a profit can continue to carry people on the books for weeks on end if they want to stay in business long-term. This has been a pretty generous set up, IMO.

Sotera.

No contingency plans. Use PTO or LWOP from day 1 of the shutdown.

Leidos: LWOP or PTO. They are covering benefits for a while. Indirect employees can only work 24 hrs this week.

Anger should not be at the companies, it should be at the Gov't. First, they want us to run so lean that there is not any OH available for short term gaps, or even decent health insurance. Then, congress gives us short term gaps.

And contracting officers that do not understand that no, I can not promise to be at work after our Period of Performance. I am not allowed to directly support you while not on contract. /VENT OFF
