Martha Speaks is Annoying

There is no monkey that is that smart in the world.

And why does he have to win every thing. Every damn things he does he wins. Even his fucking worm won the worm competition.

And what the hell kind of responsible owner lets a pet monkey wander all over creation all the time.

HATE

Curious George is enlightened. He is like a tiny Buddha. He puts good out in the world and gets good back. The MWTYH is totally gay by the way.

Martha Speaks definitely teaches a lot of good and useful vocabulary. It still holds my 8 year old's attention. And the kids are interesting and don't always do gender stereotypical things. Also there are some good storylines which include people of different backgrounds. I honestly don't see much to dislike about this show. Can you give an example of a better show (PBS -type) for this age group?

Before my DD was allowed to watch TV (around 2), I bought her a Martha Speaks books with CD. At the time, I didn't realize that it was a TV show.

Mid-way in the book, the family screams at Martha (after a dramatic pause) the words "SHUT UP!!!"

Of course, the next day my DD said "Mommy, shut up!!!"That was the first and LAST time she ever said it. But I steer clear of letting her watch the TV show.

I don't mind her being exposed to it because I was able to teach her not to say it. If she had encountered it on the playground and I didn't know to address it, it would have been worse. But I don't want her to get confused by the messages I give her and the books/CDs/TV shows I personally expose her too.

LOVE Curious George. I also find Martha supremely annoying for multiple reasons. I like Daniel Tiger; he was always my favorite character from Mr. Roger's. DC remembers the songs from the shows, which have surprisingly come in handy a few times. The characters have an odd bouncy thing they do, especially when they're sitting.

Defintion of dang: euphemism for damn.

Gosh is a euphemism for God, just as dang is a euphemism for damn. And (while we're at it), geeze is a euphemism for Jesus.

Thank God. They need to say that in the show.

Rolanda101 wrote:There is a show on PBS Kids that comes on in the morning about a yellow dog that can talk by drinking soup. The kids love it, but I can't stand it and here's why:

3. The anthrophormorphism in the show greatly bothers me. Martha can dance. She can use her paws like a human hand. Several times, I've seen her climb up on a chair and dial the family telephone so she can talk into the speaker!!! Not only is that alphabet soup causing her to speak, it's slowly turning her into a human. Soon she'll be standing on her hind legs, and more. Skits is the only normal canine on the show (with the exception of him barking "Malcolm" on one occasion. What is he talking about anyway? Malcolm in the Middle or something?)

2. While the show is teaching vocabulary, with said words popping up on screen randomly, which is distracting for me, there are some questionable "moral values" in the show. Martha uses words like "gosh dang it to heck." This isn't occasionally, either. It's whenever she's upset, which actually happens a lot. Does it bother anyone else that the cartoon uses the word "gosh" so much? My 3 and 4 year old are starting to say it and I am going to have to not let them watch this anymore which is sad because they really love it. But that just doesn't sound very nice coming out of the mouths of young children. In one episode, Martha is playing a game with a truck driver, and he says "dang" when he loses. Martha loses later and repeats the word. This teaches children to repeat what they hear.

And then there's that dreaded episode that I really hate.

It starts with Martha winning a radio contest winning a trip to a country club. She finds out that dogs can't go and begins to cry. Feeling sorry, the family throws her in a wheelchair, dresses her up, and passes her off as "Granny Martha" so they can sneak her in! It's shocking the parents approved of that solution. Would you? I wouldn't. After several close calls, Martha can't go on a hayride. Their mother had previously stated that if Martha can't go, they won't go. Yet they leave her in the room and go without her. Yes, what a wonderful thing to teach kids. Finally, Martha loses it and exposes herself in front of an entire cafeteria. Yet no one cares. They just sit in awe at the dog making a speech in front of them.

The owner of the club returns Martha to her owners, with the dad begging on his knees, saying they'll never do it again. Here comes the worst part about the episode. Instead of asking them to leave like she SHOULD have done, she just laughs it off and decides to let Martha stay. The episode in question is called "Martha Calling," and it's just so sad how educational cartoons justify dishonesty and breaking the rules of a business. I even wrote a petition to ban that episode, but the only signature on there is mine because no one cares about family-unfriendliness in cartoons anymore.

1. The voice of Martha. OH, THE GRATING COUNTRY VOICE. She goes around blabbing her head off all day, like her voice is brand-new, although the show has been running for nearly five years. She has most of the lines in the episodes. Martha needs to either stop talking so much or get shot in the face with a bazooka. She could have gotten a different voice actor, but NOOOOO. They had to choose one that sounds like the first voice of Caillou. In fact, the way Martha broke down crying sounding JUST LIKE A HUMAN has scared my three year old, Gloria.

What do you think about this annoying show?

Hey, OP,

IT'S A FUCKING CARTOON!

You find the show annoying? Turn it off.

Well, you would really disapprove of my two year old who's vocabulary has consisted of Jesus Chwist!, Oh Sit (shit), and Dammit!.

And wait a minute... you actually wrote in to have a particular Martha Speaks episode fucking banned?

Here's your solution OP. Don't watch the show.

Love Curious George
Like Martha Speaks
HATE Busytown Mysteries, which is DD' s current obsession. I hate how the pigs treat each other, I hate that they aren't mysteries, and I hate that the reasoning is so.simplistic compared to Curious George. A real mystery would be who neutered and spayed Huckle and Sally.

This might be the craziest DCUM thread I have ever read, I don't even know where to begin. I think it's a sign that I should be doing other things.

Lol, maybe we should ask if the creator of the post can change the title to "Annoying PBS shows" instead.

Yes. Why? It depicts sneaking a dog into a country club and not getting punished. It should at LEAST be edited. Think about this: A Barney episode back in the early 1990s was also petitioned and banned. Why? Nine words: "A Stranger is a Friend, You Haven't Met Yet." As a result, many children fell victim to pedophilia and molestation. I have a perfectly good reason to petition this show because children around the world will grow up to become LYING, CHEATING, DISHONEST, SMUGGLING LAWBREAKERS.

Here's your solution OP. Don't watch the show.

It's not that simple. My kids want me to watch TV with them, so I have to sit through it. They get upset when I leave, so I have to stay. Case closed, but not this post.
