Honestly, it's very, very difficult as an external candidate. You need to either a) be a VET, b). have HIGHLY specialized skills or c). know the hiring official. Those are basically your only options for getting into a competitive service agency. Excepted service may be a tad easier to get into but not much. Occasionally, some people (like myself) get lucky and get hired without having any of the above. But, this was pre-sequestration and it was for a mid-level position that I'm now stuck in because times have made it difficult for even current feds to move around within the system.
Keep applying for sure, but know that it's probably a long shot. |
