I have a 20-pack of Gala apples from Costco right here that is tasteless, like op describes. Not rotten, not spoiled, just .... utterly without taste.
And I even scanned all the varieties of apples at Costco to pick the variety that was 1. From the USA (Washington) so 2. It WOULD be in season and theoretically tasty. Nope. |
| I live near homestead farm in darnestown and when I get fruit there I think, "Holy hell, this is what fruit tastes like." Grocery store fruit is disgusting! |

Agreed. We try to buy local. Fruit should have a fragrance, too. If those plums or peaches have no smell, they're probably not going to have much flavor. Can't smell ahead with watermelon, unfortunately.
It does seem like grocery store fruit is getting much more flavorless. Even the textures are getting weird. This summer alone, I've had odd, flesh-spongy watermelon, cherries, and peaches that freaked me out too much to eat. And the non-local blueberries I had this summer were tasteless. You can get good apples, and interesting varieties, at a farmers market this time of year. We're in apple country. |

| Frustratingly, I feel like my farmers' market purchases are often very mediocre |
