How many parents who did private in DC are now sending DC to public or charter?

No, it's the uncertainty. Don't know how DCI will turn out one way or another and want to send DS to a middle school which will prepare him for the high schools we have in mind.

1st Sidwell PP here from 80s. Agreed.

Kids are welcome to apply though after graduating their k-8. It's their choice where to head for HS: private, public or boarding (if we think they're ready for the latter) n

most would sell and move to acceptable public schools over either border.

I am a Visi alum and my DH graduated from Gonzaga. We were private school kids all the way. Our children are in a popular charter. We will go private for MS and HS.

In middle school, he'll go to China for the summers. All the HSs we are considering offer advanced Chinese.

This is news to me - when did Stuyvesant HS start offering Advanced Chinese? Which other private HSs in NYC offer it?

Stuy's had Advanced Chinese, AP Mandarin, for awhile. No idea when they started offering it... Most HADES offer it or if they don't now probably will soon. Mandarin is the current language de jour.

The other schools we are looking at are Collegiate and Horace Mann in NYC. Want DS to add French in Middle school. By then DS will have had 7 yrs of Mandarin at YY. I'm sure any "holes" can be easily remedied.

What is a DC Independent-is that a charter, private, magnet, what? Please forgive my ignorance, I am the OP, graduated from a top private in DC and have kids at JKLM school and a DC charter.

Are those of you choosing to do public doing so because of the $ or your faith in the schools you have sent the kids to?

DC independent means a private school like Sidwell.

If you are asking about "DCI" - DC International School - that is a charter middle and high school starting in 2014 in the old Walter Reed campus by a consortium of immersion language charter schools. Do a search.

"Independent" is what people say to mean "private" when they are trying to sound less pretentious, only it sounds more snooty.

Also, to add to the Chinese language discussion. My kids are all DCPS, one at Wilson taking Chinese after 3 years of Chinese at Deal culminating in a fantastic 10 day trip to China during spring break-my kid did very well communicating in Chinese while there. Wilson teacher explained that if you get through AP Chinese at Wilson, kids can continue Chinese at AU.

I think people use independent to mean a private school that is not affiliated or only very loosely affiliated with a religious group/parish as a way from differentiating them from parochial schools.
