My ten YO gets horrible cold sores

Try Denavir cream. If she puts it on immediately when she feels a tingle - preferably before the sore really appears, it can really help it to not come out. Keep putting it on continuously for about 24 hours. It is much more successful the earlier she catches it.

Agree with this, denavir at the first tingle and it may not even materialize. I carry it in my purse at all times even though I may go more than 18 months without having a tingle. I get the prescription from my dentist.

I used to get the also. As a preventitave mesasure, my doctor suggested that I use lip balm (chapstick or Carmex) regularly and that I make sure I drink plenty of water. Many times, cold sores signal a lack of moisture in your lips and in the body generally. I rarely get them anymore.

Cold sore or canker sore?

Is she too young for zinc supplements?

What I want to know is why doctors/researchers can't come up with a vaccine against herpes. It's ridiculous given the percentage of people in this country (and the world) with herpes type I and II.

If it makes you and her feel any better, my first couple of outbreaks were the worst. Now as an adult I'll get maybe one at a time right on the lip that heals pretty quickly. Make sure she knows not to touch it!

valtrex every day prevents pretty much all outbreaks. I suffered from cold sores every time it got cold and my lips got chapped, or, whenever I went to the beach and got sun exposure. Suffered for years. Finally went to the doc and wish I went earlier!! Havent had outbreaks for years-and when I do, its super minimal, tiny and maybe a couple of days.

My Dr. said they were a result of stress, anxiety, and a weakened immune system (probably as a result of pushing myself too hard and not sleeping much). Anyway, the lysine was the only thing that really worked. Since my teen years, I've been fairly free of them so I do think it can be alleviated.

Cold sores are not the same thing as canker sores.

No one dies from a cold sore or even genital herpes. Maybe better to focus on the ones that kill off people.
