The big topic/ skill to be mastered for second grade math is addition and subtraction with regrouping or borrowing.

If your child is coming from public school, Virginia in particular, he/she will be ahead. Virginia math standards are more rigorous than what is being taught in private school.

I find comments like this really annoying. First, it comes across as nothing more than a pointless jab at private schools, which just begs for retaliation. Second, it's stupid because there's no way anyone here is familiar enough with the curriculum of literally dozens of private schools in the DMV area to make such a claim with any credibility.

My rising second grader worked on multiplication this summer (his choice)...so I'm hoping he gets some in class as well.

First marking period: area of rectangles; addition, subtraction, and place value to 1,000; multiplication and division with 0, 1, 2, 5, 10
Second marking period: multiplication and division facts 0-10; unit fractions
Third marking period: linear measurement; multiplication and division up to 100; equivalent fractions; multiplication of one-digit numbers by multiples of 10
Fourth marking period: time to the nearest minute and elapsed time; 1-step and 2-step word problems
