So what days will they cut? The three professional days (one at the end of each quarter) when teachers get their grading done in time for report cards? The Jewish holidays (only one day this year)? MLK day? President's Day? The day in October for the union conference (yeah, like that could ever be cut out)? Memorial Day? This isn't happening people. I'd also like to see this "study" showing the economic gain referred to in the article. Sounds like a crock of bull just like the King's Dominion Bill in VA. We're better than that here in MD! |
I can't imagine they would cut any extra days. The professional days are necessary work days for teachers, not just days off for students; the Jewish holidays were added because there would never be enough subs to cover all the classes for Jewish teachers who would take off; and the rest (except for the MSEA convention, which is ONE day) are all federal holidays. They already have school on Columbus Day. I can buy the argument that it may help beach communities, since people seem more likely to go on vacation the week before Labor Day than in mid-June, but the rest of the "extra" days? Not going to happen. |
I'm not motivated to look up Virginia or other states that go back the day after labor day but do they end a week later? I don't think so. I also don't think that they have shorter winter/spring breaks or fewer federal holidays. Why is there something magical and special about MCPS where it must go a certain number of days? Heck, now that they have 2.0 they aren't teaching anything anymore. |
Maryland state law is 180 days. MCPS goes 184 days with the 4 days built in for snow days. In the past, there have been attempts to waive the last 4 days of school if no snow days were used, but I don't think that's been successful, at least not recently.
Just looked it up--Virginia is also 180 days. |
