I had posted earlier that I didn't think there would be that much in the SoS job for her, but in the last few days I've changed my thinking on that. HRC hoped to spearhead healthcare reform in the Senate. Obama and Biden had essentially agreed to that. So she asked Ted Kennedy to let her create a healthcare reform subcommittee of his committee in order to work on it. He said no, that he intends to take the lead on healthcare reform. The consolation prize is asking her to head one of three task forces; Harkin and Mikulski will head the others. Hers would be the coverage task force. Kennedy is going to do it his way, though, and he thinks Obama is still going to prioritize healthcare reform. (Word is that Obama will focus on energy first, which I think would be terrific.) So Hillary's primary domestic cause in the Senate, one Obama and Biden have repeatedly said would be her project, will not be her project, but Kennedy's. That removes the last thing that would really keep HRC in the Senate, I think.
She will be a tremendous secretary of state. Reaction from everyone from Henry Kissinger to her Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle has been very positive. She would undoubtedly be confirmed. Word is that Obama strongly wants her to take the job and the last details of Bill Clinton's global initiative work are being hammered out, to avoid potential conflicts of interest. It will be surprising if she is not secretary of state in the Obama Administration. I am enormously impressed by this brilliant move. The Lincoln-Seward "team of rivals" angle is only part of it. This will inspire even more confidence around the world. Bravo, President-elect Obama. |
I may be completely wrong. Glenn Thrush of Politico says HRC is torn:
