Is my MIL being careless?

Put the sippy cups in dishwasher or boil. What is wrong with her??

OP here. Thx for all the feedback. It is nice to know I wasn't alone in my thinking. I really wanted to title the thread:

"My MIL is such a freaking idiot," but I decided to keep it sort of neutral.

I was secretly flabbergasted inside, but also tend to be a tad anal, so that's why I posted in the first place: to see if was just making a big deal out of nothing.

In any case, I took out all the sippie cups, soaked them in nearly boiling, soapy water, washed them well, and let them air dry. She must have thrown out the plastic bags, because they were gone a short time later. I then used my kitchen spray cleaner.... with bleach.... to sanitize the entire sink area.

Geez.

Thanks again, everyone!

Sounds like you handled it well, OP, but I'm curious about the above question, too. Why not just zip and toss?

OP here.

Well, sometimes (like, when I'm feeling "extra" tidy), I'll wash them out and toss them in the recycling bin. But honestly, I have to admit, I just toss them in the trash more times than not. I should have been more clear in my original post. I sometimes feel guilty (from the environmental standpoint) about tossing plastic into the trash... knowing it'll sit in landfill forever. The flip side though, is that I then risk spreading the germs as I wash the bag.

I know, I know... I'm probably putting too much though into it! Lol!

When I inquired, she said the soap and warm water would kill the chicken germs, so there was no need to worry about cross contamination.

I'm all about being green, but when it comes to raw meats, I do not re-use the plastic bags. They get a quick wash, away from other dishes, and then recycled or tossed in the trash.

Is she being careless or am I overreacting?

I'd throw the cups away.
